Spanish-born couturier Cristobal Balenciaga was influenced by the colors of flamenco dancers, Goya’s paintings and Moorish robes. Known for his structured, sculpted dresses and hyper-rigorous attention to detail, the designer was at his peak throughout the ’40s until 1968, when he closed his Paris salon. Beginning today, more than 70 Balenciaga pieces — clothing and accessories — are on exhibit at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute.
